The engineer in electrical engineering and diploma mathematician is a Senior Professor at Ilmenau University of Technology and Managing Director of Brandenburg Labs GmbH, a startup company specialising in immersive audio technologies for headphones.
He is the founding director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Ilmenau. For his pioneering work in the fields of digital audio coding (as the main developer of the mp3 and AAC audio coding standards), perceptual measurement techniques, wave field synthesis, psychoacoustics, and the analysis of audio and video signals, he has received numerous awards.
He is also a member of the Internet Society Hall of Fame and the IEEE Consumer Electronics Association. He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Koblenz-Landau, Leuphana University Lüneburg, and Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, Spain.
